The National School Lunch Program dates back to 1946, with the goal of insuring all children access to a nutritous lunch. Over the years the school lunch program has changed, keeping it in line with developments in nutritional science. Today's school lunch is designed to meet 1/3rd of the recommended daily allowance for protein, calcium, iron, Vitamin A and Vitamin C, with restricted amounts of fat and saturated fat. Computers are used in menu planning. Something that was not done back in 1946!
